Day 10 – Psalm 42

“God my Rock…” Psalm 42:9a

AN OUTPOURING OF THE THINGS THAT HURT DEEPLY

Hurt will always express itself. Keeping pain in the heart serves little purpose. The wisest thing to do is to learn how to pour out all the hurt and pain felt deep within. The following text must be read as an emotional outpouring of the things that had so deeply troubled the psalmist.

“I will say to God my Rock,
‘Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?’
As with the breaking of my bones, my enemies reproach me,
While they say to me all day long,
‘Where is your God?'”
Psalm 42:9-10

1. Can we express ourselves so candidly to God?

a) Can we say that we feel that God has forgotten us?
b) Can we express our doubts and consternation to God?
c) Can we speak of how we have mourned the whole day through because of oppression?

2. The answer is an assured “Yes!”

a) We speak to God who is well compared to a strong Rock.
b) God would not be perturbed when He hears our cries of distress and sorrow.
c) God being who He is will understand why we speak the way we do when we are sad.

3. Telling God about the things that bring so much pain

a) The oppression that comes from enemies.
b) The depth of pain is well described- “as with the breaking of bones”.
c) Taunts all day long from enemies who know how to cause confusion and hurt.
d) Challenge to our faith in God (“Where is your God?”)
