“He only is my rock and my salvation…” Psalm 62:6a
A SWEET REFRAIN
In Psalm 62 we catch a glimpse of how David might have employed a sweet refrain (a chorus).
“He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defence; I shall not be moved.”
Psalm 62:6
1. The features of a refrain
a) Identical thoughts are employed (Psalm 62:2, 6).
i) God is David’s rock.
ii) His salvation.
iii) His defence.
b) The words need not be exactly the same.
i) There was a slight change in wording.
ii) Psalm 62:2 has the phrase “not greatly moved” whereas Psalm 62:6 has one word less “not moved”.
iii) David had made further progression in his trust in God!
2. The functions of a refrain
The following thoughts may be suggested:-
a) There is purposeful reiteration of words.
b) It reflects steadfastness of trust in God.
c) It emphasises the correctness of placing full trust in God.
d) It highlights the significance of waiting upon the Lord.
e) It serves as a refreshing reminder of the original intent.
