Day 363 – Psalm 72

“Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel…” Psalm 72:18a

BLESSING THE NAME OF THE LORD

This is a hallowed ancient practice, dating all the way back to the time of Moses (Deuteronomy 8:10). This was certainly the practice of many palmists, including King David. It is natural that Solomon should also practise this excellent habit of blessing God.

“Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel,
Who only does wondrous things!”
Psalm 72:18

1. “Blessed be”

a) A special way of saying “Praise the Lord”.
b) These words are uttered from the depths of the soul (Psalm 103:1-2).

2. “The LORD God”

a) This is a formal address of the Lord.
b) He is the LORD God indeed!
i) Acknowledging His name.
ii) This was the name that God would be known by Israel.
iii) It is the name of the Redeemer of Israel (Exodus 6:1-9).

3. “The God of Israel”

a) Firstly, He is the God of Israel.
b) He is also the God of all who have been redeemed… from the farthest corner of the earth.

4. “Who only does wondrous things”

a) The deeds of God are not to be taken for granted.
b) They are indeed wondrous things!
c) Only One who is both God and Lord would be able to perform these deeds!
