Day 182 – Psalm 80

“Restore us, O God…” Psalm 80:3a

FINDING THE FUNDAMENTAL NEED

Every intercessor must learn how to pray effectively. One of the challenges every intercessor must seek to fathom is to know and to surface fundamental needs. What was Israel’s fundamental need?

“Restore us, O God;
Cause Your face to shine,
And we shall be saved!”
Psalm 80:3

1. “Restore us, O God”

a) There were other needs.
i) Deliverance from enemies.
ii) Forgiveness of sins.
b) But restoration was recognized as fundamental in this prayer of intercession.
i) Deliverance does not mean restoration.
ii) Forgiveness does not mean restoration either.

2. What is therefore the plea for restoration?

a) Restoration of Covenantal-relationship with God.
b) It would result in God causing His face to shine with favour on His people once again.
c) And with restoration would there be such ramifications as “salvation” (deliverance).

PRAYER FOR RESTORATION

This plea for full restoration would be repeated by Asaph three times in Psalm 80 (Psalm 80:3, 7, 19).

RECOGNITION THAT ISRAEL WAS NOT RESTORED TO GOD

Asaph recognized the fact that Israel was not fully restored to God. What was he looking for?

1. Reference to Joseph would be an important clue (Psalm 80:1b).

2. Joseph may have gone through a lot of suffering but God was with him always.

3. Joseph was greatly blessed by God and became a great source of blessing to his family.

This prayer was for God to lead Israel even as He led Joseph (Genesis 37, 39-50).
