Day 185 – Psalm 80

“Our enemies laugh among themselves.” Psalm 80:6b

THE BLESSINGS OF GOD

God’s intention to bless Israel was made very clear to the nation (Exodus 3:8-10). The very history of Israel is full of evidence of God’s blessing (Exodus, Numbers).

1. God delivered Israel from bondage to Egypt

Moses was raised up to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt.

2. In the Abrahamic covenant God promised them the land of Canaan

He fulfilled this promise when Joshua conquered the land.

THE NATURE OF GOD’S BLESSINGS

Israel failed to comprehend the nature of God’s blessings. There was a part that Israel must fulfill. God expected the nation to walk in His ways faithfully. But Israel rebelled and chose not to follow God’s laws. In choosing to walk in the path of sin, Israel forfeited the blessings God desired to bestow on the nation.

SOMBRE CONSEQUENCES

Asaph showed astute understanding of the consequences of Israel’s folly.

“You have made us a strife to our neighbours,
And our enemies laugh among themselves.”
Psalm 80:6

1. “You have made us a strife to our neighbors”

a) God had allowed their “neighbours” to overrun Israel.
b) These neighbouring countries were actually striving among themselves to see who could plunder Israel more.

2. “And our enemies laugh among themselves”

a) Their enemies were laughing at the hapless nation.
b) They were laughing in mocking derision.

PLEADING THE SUFFERING OF ISRAEL

Asaph brought this aspect of suffering to God in humble prayer.

1. Israel was like a flock of sheep badly scattered and killed.

2. The nation needed God’s personal shepherding.

3. Only God could turn things around for the nation. Only He could bring about another special deliverance as in the days of Moses.
