Day 231 – Psalm 83

“Make them like the whirling dust…” Psalm 83:13a

POWERFUL IMAGERY

Asaph used powerful imagery to describe how he hoped God would destroy the wicked enemies of Israel.

“O my God, make them like the whirling dust,
Like the chaff before the wind!”
Psalm 83:13

1. “O my God”

a) This is not used as an expression of shock or horror (as it is today).
b) This expression describes the following:-
i) A deep and close relationship with God.
ii) A heartfelt cry.
iii) A cry tinged with much sadness.
iv) It is certainly not a wicked plea.

2. “Make them like the whirling dust”

a) The enemies of Israel:-
i) Israel had enemies in times past.
ii) Israel had enemies in the days of Asaph.
iii) God had delivered Israel from their enemies time and again.
iv) But they keep coming back to harass and hurt Israel.
v) Would God not deal with Israel’s enemies permanently?
vi) Would it not be better if God were to make the enemies like the whirling dust?
b) “Like the chaff before the wind”
i) The enemies of Israel were compared to chaff.
ii) Would God not consider blowing them away as the wind blows away chaff?
iii) Would this not be a better solution rather than deliverance?

Asaph could suggest, but he would have to leave the answer entirely to God!
