Day 237 – Psalm 83

“The Most High over all the earth.” Psalm 83:18b

THE GREAT NAME OF GOD

Asaph carefully and zealously guarded the great name of God above everything else. His prayer for the deliverance of Israel and the defeat of wicked enemies had one goal. This goal was clearly stated in the following concluding text.

“That they may know that You, whose name alone is the LORD,
Are the Most High over all the earth.”
Psalm 83:18

1. “Whose name alone is the LORD”

a) This was the name God chose to reveal Himself with to the nation of Israel (Exodus 6:3).
i) He had revealed Himself to the patriarchs as God Almighty.
ii) He would now reveal Himself to Israel by the name LORD.
b) The name “LORD”.
i) This is a reference to His profound eternal self-existence.
ii) This is a reference to His Lordship over Israel and the whole earth.
iii) This is a reference also to His majestic sovereignty.

2. “That they may know”

a) Pharaoh in the days of Moses was brought to his knees in humble recognition of the Lord.
b) The many nations who had tried to suppress Israel in the days of the Judges had to acknowledge the God of Israel.
c) In the present context (Asaph’s day); the psalmist prayed that all the enemies of Israel might stand in awe of the great God of Israel.

3. “The Most High over all the earth”

a) Higher than the mighty kings that had gathered together to destroy Israel.
b) Higher than all their combined military might.
c) Higher than all the gods they worshipped.

Asaph’s regard for the holy name of God is truly profound. Let us be challenged to pray that many may know the matchless mighty Name of God.
