Psalm 89:34a "My covenant I will not break..."
Day 349 – Psalm 89
“My covenant I will not break…” Psalm 89:34a
THE STRENGTH OF GOD’S COVENANT
God’s relationship with mankind is profoundly expressed in the form of “covenants”. Sadly, man breaks the covenants of God all too easily. In absolute contrast, God never reneges on His commitment to His covenants so graciously extended to man.
“My covenant I will not break,
Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.”
Psalm 89:34
1. “My covenant”
a) God can rightly call the Davidic covenant “My covenant”.
b) It originated from Him.
c) Divine prerogative allowed Him to give this covenant to David.
2. “I will not break”
a) God made a solemn promise here.
b) He will not break His covenant.
c) He may discipline some of the wicked descendants of King David.
d) But He will not break the covenant He gave to David.
3. “Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips”
a) This is truly an amazing promise.
b) Every word that proceeds from God’s mouth would be honoured!
c) He would never need to alter His word in the first place.
d) He would not alter His word even if some of the kings would become wicked and corrupt.
A COVENANT-KEEPING GOD
What a great covenant-keeping God the Lord is! We cannot help but echo an earlier text.
“For who in the heavens can be compared to the LORD?
Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the LORD?”
Psalm 89:6
What great joy must fill the heart when we ponder this word about our covenant-keeping God! Wicked and foolish are those who decry the graciousness and faithfulness of the Lord!
