Day 365 – Psalm 89

“Remember, Lord, the reproach of Your servants-” Psalm 89:50a

REMEMBER

Ethan used the word “remember” in a different context now. It is possible that he could have learned from the prayers found in the Scriptures as to how one may plead with the word “remember”.

“Remember, Lord, the reproach of Your servants-
How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples.”
Psalm 89:50

1. “Remember”

a) Moses used this word in prayer (Exodus 32:13).
b) Solomon used this word with specific reference to King David (2 Chronicles 6:42).

2. “Remember, Lord, the reproach of Your servants”

a) King Hezekiah offered a similar prayer (Isaiah 37:17c).
b) The reproach of the servants of God was tantamount to a reproach to the Lord Himself (Isaiah 37:23-24).

3. “How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples”

a) Ethan now explains why he felt as he did in this text.
b) As one of the spiritual leaders of the nation he bore the brunt of many reproaches.
i) Enemies from without would try and create division in the country (blaming the leaders).
ii) Enemies within would also blame the leaders (secular and spiritual), for not coming up with a solution for the problems afflicting the nation.
iii) The common people would lash out against the leaders as well.
iv) Being a servant of God was a heavy burden.
v) Ethan bore these reproaches on his bosom (he took them very personally).

THE BEST RECOURSE

1. He poured out his heart before the Lord- in great frustration (Psalm 89:38-45).

2. He supplicated before God, and sought to pray consciously with the Davidic covenant in mind (Psalm 89:49-50).
