“Blessed be the LORD forevermore! Amen and Amen.” Psalm 89:52

BEARING REPROACH

Ethan felt deeply for the nation of Judah. He had developed a deep and patriotic love for his people and also the royal family.

“With which Your enemies have reproached, O LORD,
With which they have reproached the footsteps
of Your anointed.
Blessed be the LORD forevermore!
Amen and Amen.”
Psalm 89:51-52

1. The enemies

a) They were enemies of Judah.
b) But by their wickedness, they may indeed also be called, “God’s enemies”.

2. The reproach of the enemies

a) The example of Sennacherib railing against Judah and the Lord is classic.
b) The Rabshakeh, the commander of the Assyrian army reproached:-
i) King Hezekiah for “deceiving” the nation (Isaiah 36:14).
ii) The Lord for “deceiving” the nation (Isaiah 37:10).

3. Feeling the pain of these reproaches

Ezra felt the stress of having to bear these reproaches.

4. “The footsteps of Your anointed”

a) The enemies had done their work well.
b) They had noted “the footsteps of (God’s) anointed”.
c) The enemies reproached the sinful steps of the king.
d) Ethan had no reply to these reproaches as he struggled as to how he could effectively pray for the nation!

BLESSING GOD’S NAME- NEVERTHELESS!

Ethan was wise and correct to conclude his psalm with blessing the Lord forever more! We may never fully comprehend all God’s thoughts and ways, but by faith, we can say, “Blessed be the LORD forevermore! Amen and Amen.”
