“We have been consumed by Your anger…” Psalm 90:7a

ANOTHER SOBERING TRUTH

Moses understood the significance of “the wrath of God” as few understood it. He had seen the wrath of God first-hand, and up close!

“For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.”
Psalm 90:7

1. “For we have been consumed by Your anger”

Two instances of God’s anger may be cited :

a) When Israel worshipped a golden calf as the god who delivered them from Egypt (Exodus 32).
b) When Israel refused to go into the Promised Land because of rank unbelief (Numbers 14).

2. “And by Your wrath we are terrified”

a) The consequences of God’s wrath are terrifying.
i) God had every right to be angry.
ii) He could abrogate His covenant with Israel because the nation had broken it severely.
b) Terrified by God.
i) Israel could have been destroyed.
ii) Many died because of their sinful and stubborn ways.

VITAL LESSONS LEARNED

Moses learned deep and vital lessons as he witnessed the wrath of God.

1. God’s wrath was not easily kindled because He was most merciful.

2. The terrible way in which Israel sinned against the Lord had to result in punishment!

a) The threat of death will always cause fear.
b) Seeing people die because they refuse to repent was an experience never to be forgotten.

3. The only way to appease God.

Moses had to learn how to stand in the breach (Psalm 106:23). This was a huge responsibility that he had to master quickly and practise diligently! Lives may depend on his intercession!
