Day 147 – Psalm 106

“We have sinned with our fathers…” Psalm 106:6a

CONFESSION OF SIN

Not everyone knows how to make full and complete confession of sin. The following text has much to teach us how we ought to confess our sins and iniquities to God.

“We have sinned with our fathers,
We have committed iniquity,
We have done wickedly.”
Psalm 106:6

1. “With our fathers”

a) This confession may well be an intercessory prayer for the nation.
b) There is an attempt to identify with the sins of the forefathers.
c) There certainly is no distancing of ourselves from the sins committed in the past.

2. Heartfelt and contrite confession expressed

a) We have sinned.
b) We have committed iniquity.
c) We have done wickedly.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS MANNER OF CONFESSION

The psalmist reflects his knowledge of the way in which the prophets of old prayed. He was walking in their footsteps:

1. Daniel the prophet prayed in this manner (Daniel 9).

2. Ezra the scribe prayed in similar fashion (Ezra 9:5-15).

THE PROMISE OF GOD WHEN WE CONFESS SIN

Confession of sin serves a number of purposes. The following cluster of texts reflects the heart of the truly repentant.

1. A desire to be cleansed (Isaiah 1:18).

2. A desire to cast away transgressions and to have a new heart and a new spirit (Ezekiel 18:30-31).

3. A desire to be fully restored to God as His redeemed ones (Isaiah 44:22).

4. A desire to know the restoration of the joy of salvation (Psalm 51:12).
