Day 165 – Psalm 106

“Concerning whom the LORD had commanded them…” Psalm 106:34b

IN THE PROMISED LAND

After a long journey of 40 years, the children of Israel finally entered into the Promised Land. How did the children of Israel fare after they were given their inheritance?

“They did not destroy the peoples,
Concerning whom the LORD had commanded them,
But they mingled with the Gentiles
And learned their works.”
Psalm 106:34-35

1. “They did not destroy the peoples”

a) This period was recorded in the Book of Judges 1-2.
b) The children of Israel were commanded to give battle to the different peoples who lived in Canaan.
c) However, there was blatant disregard for the Lord’s commandment.
d) What were the reasons why they did not obey God’s commandment?
i) They felt that they were very strong and did not need to destroy their enemies
(Judges 1:28).
ii) They put their enemies under tribute instead (Judges 1:28, 30).
iii) They had over-estimated their strength and under-estimated the resilience of their enemies.

2. “But they mingled with the Gentiles”

a) “Mingled with the Gentiles”
i) The Gentiles were “the nations” that had fought with Israel.
ii) There was inter-marriage with the Gentiles.
b) “And learned their works”
i) They learned the ways of the Gentiles.
ii) They assimilated their religious beliefs and their faith in God was compromised.
