“Be exalted, O God, above the heavens…” Psalm 108:5a

CONCERNED ABOUT THE EXALTATION OF GOD’S NAME

One of the most challenging concerns of Biblical writers was the exaltation of the name of God. David was among those who sought to exalt the name of the Lord.

“Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
And Your glory above all the earth.”
Psalm 108:5

1. “Be exalted, O God”

a) A proper and correct understanding of who God is should cause one to desire to exalt His name.
b) The exaltation of God is inherently correct.
c) The nature of God’s Being ought to cause one to exalt His name.
d) A deep knowledge of God would strengthen the desire to exalt His name.
e) A meaningfully-cultivated relationship with God would result in this strong desire to exalt Him.

2. “Above the heavens”

a) It is natural to admire the heavens.
b) Looking at the heavens would cause a sense of awe to be felt.
c) However, God is even greater than the heavens for He created them!

3. “Your glory above all the earth”

a) There are many things on earth that are also awe-inspiring.
b) The mountains and the seas are frequent subjects of artists and poets.
c) But these come from the creative acts of God.
d) The greater challenge is to look at creation and to desire that God’s glory would be seen.
e) God’s glory and His exaltation are closely related concepts.
f) David was deeply committed to exalting the great name of God and His glory.

g) To this end he wrote a number of psalms to promote this idea (Psalm 8, Psalm 19).
