“Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end.” Psalm 119:33a

PRAYING FOR DIVINE GUIDANCE

The psalmist recognized that he must do his part in learning the Scriptures. Human teachers are also involved in the learning process. But above all, he recognized the need for Divine guidance in the process of learning the ways of God. Hence this impassioned plea for God to teach.

“Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes,
And I shall keep it to the end.
Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law;
Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
Make me walk in the path of Your commandments,
For I delight in it.
Incline my heart to Your testimonies,
And not to covetousness.”
Psalm 119:33-36

1. Pleading for God’s special involvement in teaching

a) God personally teaches.
b) He does this by giving understanding.
c) He can cause one to walk in the path of His commandments.
d) He can cause the heart to be more inclined to His testimonies.

2. The pupil’s part in the process of learning

a) A determination to learn well is strongly implied in the prayer for God to teach.
b) The pupil must desire to keep God’s word faithfully… to the very end.
c) The pupil determines that when he has a greater understanding he will keep and observe God’s laws with his whole heart.
d) The pupil determines that he will find a genuine delight in the keeping of the laws of God.

3. Battling a special problem

a) The problem of “covetousness” was candidly brought up.
b) This was a very real problem for the psalmist and thus he prayed that his heart might not be inclined to covetousness, for he knew only too well that this sin can destroy the best of spiritual intentions to walk in the paths of God.
