(I) THE LAST KING OF ISRAEL

1. King Hoshea (2 Kings 17:1)

a) He had risen up against the previous king of Israel (2 Kings 15:30)

b) He killed King Pekah and ascended the throne of Israel (2 Kings 15:30)

2. Summary of his reign

a) He did evil too

b) But not as bad as some of the previous kings (2 Kings 17:2)

c) He reigned for only 9 years (2 Kings 17:6)

(II) KING SHALMANESER OF ASSYRIA

1. Shalmaneser conquered Israel

2. Israel becomes a vassal to Assyria

3. Israel is forced to pay tribute to Assyria

4. Discovery of a plot by Hoshea

a) Plot with Egypt to resist Assyria (2 Kings 17:4a)

b) Refused to send tribute to Assyria (2 Kings 17:4b)

c) Hoshea imprisoned (2 Kings 17:4c)

(III) CONQUEST OF ISRAEL

1. Samaria besieged for 3 years (2 Kings 17:5)

2. Israel defeated and carried away to Assyria (2 Kings 17:6)

(IV) DISCUSSION OF THE REASONS FOR THE FAILURE OF ISRAEL

2 Kings 17:7-18

1. They had sinned against the Lord (2 Kings 17:7a)

2. They had “feared other gods” (“fear”- “reverence”) (2 Kings 17:7b)

3. Walked in the statutes of the nations they had displaced in Canaan (2 Kings 17:8)

4. Rife idolatrous practices (2 Kings 17:9-12, 16-17)

5. Many prophets and seers sent to warn Israel (2 Kings 17:13)

6. Rejection of the prophets of the Lord (2 Kings 17:14-15)

7. Witchcraft and sorcery (2 Kings 17:17)

(V) ISRAEL REMOVED FROM GOD’S SIGHT

1. Israel angered God (2 Kings 17:18a)

2. Israel removed from God’s sight (2 Kings 17:18b)

3. All descendants of Israel rejected (2 Kings 17:20)

4. King Jeroboam blamed as the one who caused Israel to turn to idolatry (2 Kings 17:21-23)
