A GRACIOUS ACT

Text: Genesis 42:25-38

(I) A GRACIOUS ACT

1. Joseph’s command (Genesis 42:25)

a) To fill the sacks of his brothers with grain

b) To restore the money paid for the grain

c) To give (extra) provisions for the journey home to Canaan

d) Unknown to his brothers

2. The brothers of Joseph (Genesis 42:26)

a) Loaded their donkeys with the grain

b) Departed from Egypt

(II) THE JOURNEY HOME

1. Along the journey home (Genesis 42:27)

a) One of the brothers opened up a sack to give food to the donkeys at an encampment (rest area)

b) He saw the money he had paid for the grain

2. Alarmed at what they had seen (Genesis 42:28)

a) Fear gripped their hearts

b) They saw this as an act of God

c) But they did not understand what this meant

(III) BACK HOME IN CANAAN

1. Report of the brothers to Jacob (Genesis 42:29-34)

a) The lord of the land

b) He spoke roughly

c) Accused as spies

d) Protest of the brothers

e) Information given about the family members

f) Simeon was detained

g) The youngest brother must be brought to Egypt for the next purchase of grain

h) They would then be allowed to trade in the land

2. Checking their sacks (Genesis 42:35)

a) They saw that all their money had been returned

b) Fear was felt by all

3. Jacob’s response (Genesis 42:36)

a) Deep grief still felt at the loss of Jacob

b) Simeon in Egypt

c) The fear of losing Benjamin

4. Reuben’s pledge (Genesis 42:37)

a) He pledged the life of his two sons

b) He promised to bring back Benjamin safely

5. Jacob’s Determination (Genesis 42:38)

a) He would not allow Benjamin to go down to Egypt

b) If anything happened to Benjamin he would die with great sorrow
