JACOB
Text: Genesis 37:1-11

(I) JACOB
1. In the land of Canaan (Genesis 37:1)
2. His sons helped to look after his vast flocks (Genesis 37:2)
(II) JOSEPH
1. Seventeen (Genesis 37:2)
2. He brought a bad report against his brothers (Genesis 37:2)
(III) RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JACOB AND JOSEPH
1. Israel (Jacob) loved Joseph more than all his children (Genesis 37:3a)
2. He was the son of his old age (Genesis 37:3b)
3. Made him a tunic of many colours (Genesis 37:3c)
(IV) RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS
1. The brothers noted that their father loved Joseph more (Genesis 37:4a)
2. They hated him (Genesis 37:4b)
3. They could not speak peaceably to him (Genesis 37:4c)
(V) JOSEPH THE DREAMER
1. Joseph had a dream (Genesis 37:5a)
2. He shares his dream with his brothers (Genesis 37:5b-6)
3. They hated him because he had such a dream (Genesis 37:5c)
(VI) JOSEPH’S DREAM
1. Dream of sheaves being bound (Genesis 37:7a)
2. His sheaf stood upright (Genesis 37:7b)
3. The sheaves of the brothers bowed before Joseph’s sheaves (Genesis 37:7c)
(VII) RESPONSE OF THE BROTHERS
1. They understood the meaning of the sheaves
2. They rejected its implications
a) Did Joseph think he would reign over them? (Genesis 37:8a)
b) Did he think that he would have dominion over them? (Genesis 37:8b)
3. They hated Joseph even more (Genesis 37:8c)
a) For His dream
b) For his words
4. Thought behind Joseph’s dream
a) That Joseph could be made head of the clan after the death of Jacob
b) This would be resented and rejected by the brothers
(VIII) SECOND DREAM OF JOSEPH
1. He had another dream and shares it with his brothers (Genesis 37:9a)
2. The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed to him (Genesis 37:9b)
3. Dream shared with his father too (Genesis 37:10a)
4. Rebuke from his father (Genesis 37:10b)
(IX) RESPONSES FROM JACOB AND THE BROTHERS
1. The brothers hated him (Genesis 37:11a)
2. Jacob kept Joseph’s dream in mind (Genesis 37:11b)
