Text: Genesis 47:1-12
(I) JOSEPH MEETS THE PHARAOH
1. He informs the Pharaoh that his father and his siblings had arrived in Egypt (Genesis 47:1)
2. They were in the land of Goshen (in the Nile delta)
3. He presents five of his brothers to the Pharaoh (Genesis 47:2)
(II) PHARAOH’S INTERVIEW WITH THE BROTHERS
1. Query of the Pharaoh
What is your occupation? (Genesis 47:3a)
2. Answer of the brothers
a) They are shepherds (Genesis 47:3b)
b) The famine in Canaan made it impossible to raise livestock (Genesis 47:4a)
c) Plea to be allowed to stay in Goshen (Genesis 47:4b)
(III) PHARAOH’S WORD TO JOSEPH
1. He is not offended by the use of the word “shepherd”
2. He shows much graciousness to Joseph (Genesis 47:5-6)
a) He allows Joseph to choose the best land for his family
b) If they wished to stay in Goshen they may
c) If anyone wanted to work for the Pharaoh, he would be welcome
(IV) JACOB MEETS THE PHARAOH
1. Joseph presents Jacob to the Pharaoh (Genesis 47:7a)
2. Jacob blesses the Pharaoh (Genesis 47:7b, 10)
3. Pharaoh’s Conversation with Jacob
a) Query of the Pharaoh
b) Jacob’s reply
i) He was only 130 years old (Genesis 47:9)
ii) He had not attained the years of his forebears
iii) His years were “few and evil” (Genesis 47:9)
(V) SETTLING DOWN IN EGYPT
1. He gave them a possession in the land of Egypt (Genesis 47:11)
2. This was in accordance to Pharaoh’s command (Genesis 47:11b)
3. Joseph provided for his family (Genesis 47:12)
a) His father Jacob
b) His siblings
c) Their families
(VI) AGE OF THE PATRIARCHS
1. Abraham died at 175 years of age (Genesis 25:7)
2. Isaac died at 180 years of age (Genesis 35:2)
3. Jacob died at 147 years of age (Genesis 47:28)
