(I) FAMINE IN THE LAND
1. Very severe famine (Genesis 47:13a)
2. No bread (Genesis 47:13b)
3. Egypt affected (Genesis 47:13c)
4. Canaan affected (Genesis 47:13d)
(II) MONEY FOR THE PHARAOH’S TREASURY
1. Joseph’s prudence enabled him to sell grain in the famine
2. All the money was brought into Pharaoh’s house (Genesis 47:14)
(III) WHEN MONEY RAN OUT
1. The people pleaded for grain to survive (Genesis 47:15a)
2. They had no more money (Genesis 47:15b)
3. Barter trade practised (Genesis 47:16-17)
a) Horses
b) Flocks
c) Cattle
d) Donkeys
4. Bread was given in exchange for the above for a whole year
(IV) WHEN THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT TO TRADE WITH
1. The famine prevailed for another year (Genesis 47:18a)
2. No more money, no more livestock (Genesis 47:18b)
3. Only their lives and their lands were left (Genesis 47:19)
a) They offered themselves to serve the Pharaoh
b) They offered their lands in exchange for food
4. Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh (Genesis 47:20)
5. Movement of the people (Genesis 47:21)
a) They were put into cities
b) For easier management
c) For sheer survival
6. The priests in the land (Genesis 47:22)
a) They did not have to sell their land
b) The Pharaoh provided for all their needs
(V) JOSEPH’S DEAL WITH THE EGYPTIANS
1. Graciously Joseph gave them seed for sowing (Genesis 47:23)
2. They are to give 20% of their harvest to Pharaoh (Genesis 47:24)
3. The Egyptians were grateful for this deal offered to them (Genesis 47:25)
4. This became a law in the land (Genesis 47:26)
5. Exemption: The priests would not come under this law
(VI) JACOB IN THE LAND OF EGYPT
1. He lived for 17 more years
2. He was now 147 years old (Genesis 47:28)
3. Jacob makes Joseph promise that he would not be buried in Egypt
a) He makes Joseph to swear that he would not be buried in Egypt
b) He would be buried in the land of his fathers (Genesis 47:30)
4. Joseph complies and promises to fulfil his father’s wish (Genesis 47:31)
