DIFFICULT CASES

1. Too hard to judge easily

a) Between degrees of guilt for bloodshed
b) Between one judgment and another
c) Between one punishment or another
d) Matters of controversy   (Deuteronomy 17:8)

2. A higher judge

a) In the place God would choose (Jerusalem)   (Deuteronomy 17:8)
b) The make-up of the Judiciary Council
i) The priests
ii) The Levites
iii) The judge in the capital   (Deuteronomy 17:9)
c) They will pass the judgment   (Deuteronomy 17:9)

EXECUTION OF JUDICIARY DECISION

1. To be carried out   (Deuteronomy 17:10)

2. To be carried out carefully   (Deuteronomy 17:10)

a) According to the judgment
b) According to the sentence of the law
c) No turning aside, right or left   (Deuteronomy 17:11)

THE SIN OF PRESUMPTION

1. When one does not carry out the orders given   (Deuteronomy 17:12)

2. The priest stands to minister before the LORD God   (Deuteronomy 17:12)

3. The judge has the same privilege of ministering before God   (Deuteronomy 17:12)

PENALTY OF PRESUMPTUOUSNESS

1. Death penalty for the sin of presumption   (Deuteronomy 17:12)

2. This may seem very harsh

3. The deeper reason

a) People to hear
b) People to fear
c) No longer act presumptuously
