Subject: “Who are Israelites”

4 Who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises;

5 of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.

Romans 9:4-5

THE NAME OF ISRAEL

1. In Romans 2 he used the word “Jew” (Romans 2:17-29)

a) The word “Jew” was used with pride
b) The basic idea behind this word is “praise”
c) Many Jews assumed that they have the praise of God
d) This is questionable for real praise is given to those who are truly righteous in their life

2. Paul chose the word “Israelites” in this text

a) This is a more historical word
b) It goes back to the days of the patriarch Jacob who was given a new name by God
c) That name was Israel (Genesis 32:22-32)
i) The term frequently used in Exodus was “the children of Israel”
ii) The term in vogue was “Israelites”

1. To whom pertain the adoption

God adopted Israel as His “son”

2. The glory

The glory of God was manifested again and again

3. The covenants

a) The Abrahamic Covenant
b) The Davidic Covenant

4. The giving of the law

a) At Sinai
b) Through Moses

5. The service of God

6. And the promises;

THE ANCESTORS OF THE ISRAELITES

1. They were called “fathers” with due respect

2. They were fathers “according to the flesh”

THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

1. The Lord Jesus was the Christ

a) He was the Anointed One
b) He is to be given due honour
c) He is “over all”
d) He is “the eternally blessed God”
e) Paul affirmed this with the word “Amen!”
