SENIOR SUNDAY SCHOOL 8 September 2024

Text: Romans 10

Subject: “Christ is the end of the law”

1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.

2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.

4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Romans 10:1-4

THE HEART OF THE APOSTLE PAUL

1. He has already expressed his heart once before

1 I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit,

2 that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart.

3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh

Romans 9:1-3

2. He expresses his heart’s concern for Israel, once again (Romans 10:1)

a) His desire was for Israel to be saved
b) His prayer was for the salvation of Israel

ANALYSIS OF WHY ISRAEL WAS NOT SAVED

1. This was a sad analysis

2. It was shared candidly

3. This was not shared to condemn

4. This was written in the hope that some would respond positively

5. Some reasons stated:

a) Zeal
i) Israel was zealous for the Lord
ii) But it was a zeal without correct knowledge
b) Ignorance of what God had taught about righteousness
i) God’s righteousness ought to be sought by faith
ii) His righteousness is to be imputed through faith
iii) Israel had not submitted to God to obtain imputed righteousness
c) Human righteousness
i) Israel sought to establish its own righteousness
ii) It believed that through personal righteousness, salvation may be obtained
iii) This kind of ignorance was so unnecessary

6. A misunderstanding of the Law of God

a) Jewish understanding of the end of the law
i) Righteousness
ii) Salvation through works
iii) This was prevalent
iv) But this was erroneous
b) The Biblical teaching of the end of the Law
i) We are led to the Lord Jesus Christ
ii) When we come to the end, we would see the Messiah
c) The role of the Messiah was prophesied in Isaiah 53
i) He would suffer for our sins
ii) He would be delivered to death because of sin
iii) He would give salvation
iv) He would impute righteousness
d) That Messiah is identified clearly
i) By His life
ii) By His teachings
iii) By His death and resurrection
iv) That Messiah is the Lord Jesus Christ
v) He is the end of the law!
