"You come short in no gift..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 1:7

INDICATIONS OF A GOOD CHURCH

How would we know that a Church is a good one? What are some indications we should look for?

“So that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting
for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 1:7

1. “So that”

a) If a Church is properly established.
b) There are be clear indications.
c) This was certainly the case with reference to the Corinthian Church.

2. “You come short in no gift”

a) The word “gift” that was used here is derived from the word “grace”.
b) Paul was referring to the “grace-gifts” from the Lord.
i) These are not just natural talents developed in the normal way.
ii) These are gifts of grace bestowed by the Lord to His children.
c) The Corinthians did not come short of these grace-gifts.

3. Some grace-gifts that may be highlighted: –

a) People may be considered grace-gifts.

Among the top of the list would be the apostles

b) Spiritual gifts would be another category:
i) Paul listed some of these gifts in 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12.
ii) Some of these gifts involved supernatural powers resulting in miracles.
iii) Some others were more ordinary but were nevertheless gifts from the Lord.
c) When these gifts are properly employed:
i) The Church is greatly strengthened.
ii) The testimony of Christ in the midst of the Church is easily discernible.

4. “Eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ”

a) Paul noted this special and important indicator.
b) A Church that is truly well-established would be one that has been taught about the Second Coming of Christ.
c) The Church that eagerly awaits the return of the Lord Jesus Christ is a faithful and watchful one.
