"How do some among you say that there is no resurrection..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 15:12

ANOTHER PROBLEM

Paul had dealt with many problems in the Corinthian Church. Another problem emerged that had to be dealt with firmly.

“Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead,
how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen.
And if Christ is not risen,
then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.”
1 Corinthian 15:12-14

1. The Gospel preached

a) That Christ died. (1 Corinthians 15:3)
b) That He was buried. (1 Corinthians 15:4a)
c) That He rose from the dead. (1 Corinthians 15:4b)
d) All these were “according to the Scriptures”. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

2. “How do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?”

a) This was a grim reality.
b) There was denial of the resurrection of the dead.

3. Why did some not believe in the resurrection?

a) Influence of false teachers.
b) Lack of faith to believe that God can and will raise the dead.
c) The denial of the doctrine of the resurrection had very significant ill-effects.

4. The doctrine of the resurrection had to be stoutly defended.

5. The repercussions of rejecting the doctrine of the resurrection.

a) The resurrection of the dead and the resurrection of Jesus are closely related.
b) To deny one is to the deny the other.
c) If there is no resurrection of the dead
i) Then Christ had not risen from the dead.
ii) If Christ had not risen then the gospel content would be adversely affected.
iii) The preaching of the gospel would also be affected in a very negative manner.
iv) Preaching would be in vain.
v) Faith in the risen Saviour would be questionable.
vi) Faith in the Lord could end up “empty!”
