"Servants of Christ..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 4:1

SERVING THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

Each and every true believer ought to have a sense of love to serve the Lord Jesus Christ! It is natural to want to follow and serve One who is Saviour and Lord!

“Let a man consider us, as servants of Christ
and stewards of the mysteries of God.”
1 Corinthians 4:1

1. “Let a man consider us”

a) This has reference to how people will gauge us.
b) Every servant of Christ must expect to be “judged” by people; they must judge us as true servants.

2. How we ought to see ourselves

a) Paul provided a good example.
b) He saw himself as “a bondservant” (a slave; in Greek, a “doulos”).
c) At heart, this was how Paul always regarded himself.

3. “As servants of Christ”

a) The word here is not “doulos”.
b) Paul used another word for “servant” (Greek – “huperetes”).
i) An attendant
ii) An orderly
iii) This is a humble word
c) Paul applied this to himself and to his fellow-workers.

4. “And stewards of the mysteries of God”

a) The word “stewards” was used to describe people who were given greater responsibilities.
b) In a large household, there were often many servants.
i) There were servants who served in the humblest of capacities (washing feet).
ii) There were others who waited on the Master personally (huperetes).
iii) Then there were those who were above the two types of servants mentioned above. These were called “stewards” (Greek- “oikonomos”).
c) Paul used this word “oikonomos” to people who were entrusted with the “mysteries of God”.
d) These were servants of the Lord who taught the Scriptures.
e) The word “mysteries” refers to knowledge revealed by the Lord to His faithful servants.
