"Figuratively transferred..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 4:6

FIGURES OF SPEECH

Speech is always fascinating to observe. Sometimes, plain and simple language may be employed. At other times, figures of speech need to be used to communicate more effectively.

“Now these things, brethren,
I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes,
that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written,
that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.”
1 Corinthians 4:6

1. “Now these things, brethren”

a) This is a reference to the past few chapters that Paul had written.
b) Especially with the problem of factions in the church (1 Corinthians 1:12).

2. “Figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos”

a) Paul as a planter (1 Corinthians 3:6).
b) Apollos as one who watered (1 Corinthians 3:6).
c) Both are but “ministers” (1 Corinthians 3:5).

3. “For your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written”

a) The figures of speech were humble ones.
b) They were especially chosen so that no one would need to be carried away.

4. “None of you may be puffed up”

a) Filled with foolish pride.
b) This is potentially dangerous.

5. “On behalf of one against the other”

a) On behalf of Paul.
b) On behalf of Apollos.
c) On behalf of Cephas.
d) These factions took pride in their chosen heroes.
e) The groups went against each other.
f) The unity of the church was badly affected.
g) This was dishonouring to the Lord.
h) The problems could escalate further and cause even more damage if they were not arrested and resolved.
