"Do you not know..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 9:13

THE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE

The lack of understanding of the Lord’s Word had appalling consequences! Paul had to address this problem of spiritual ignorance!

“Do you not know that those who minister the holy things
eat of the things of the temple,
and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar?
Even so the Lord has commanded that
those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.”
1 Corinthians 9:13-14

1. The Priests and the Levites

a) These were the servants of God set apart for the Temple ministry.
b) They were provided for, by the express command of the LORD (Deuteronomy 18:1-8).
i) They were chosen by the Lord (Deuteronomy 18:5).
ii) They were to be properly provided for!
iii) Of the offerings given to God, a portion had to be set aside for the Priests and Levites.

2. In the New Testament

a) The servants of God were no longer the Priests and the Levites.
b) A new order of servants was raised up.
c) These were the preachers of the Gospel.
i) They could be apostles and prophets.
ii) They could be pastors/ teachers.
iii) They could be evangelists/ missionaries.

3. They are to live from the gospel

a) They may be compared to the Priests and Levites of old.
b) They are to be adequately supported as well.

4. “The Lord has commanded”

a) This word must be given due consideration.
b) Support of the servants of God was “commanded!”
c) This command must be given due consideration!
i) When the Disciples were sent out to preach they were told not to worry about provision (Matthew 10:9-10).
ii) He declared that “a worker is worthy of his food” (Matthew 10:10).

This is another way of assuring His disciples that they would be provided for!
