"All things to all men..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 9:22

A DEEP BURDEN FOR SOULS

Paul had a deep burden for souls. He had been wondrously saved and he wanted to help others find the salvation that he obtained from the Lord.

“To those who are without law, as without law
(not being without law toward God, but under
law toward Christ), that I might win those who are
without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I
might win the weak. I have become all things
to all men, that I might by all means save some.”
1 Corinthians 9:21-22

1. “To those who are without law”

a) This is a reference to the Gentiles.
b) They had no formal knowledge of the law of God (as the Jews had).
c) Thus they are called “without the law” (Romans 2:14-15).

2. “Not being without law toward God”

a) Paul’s reference here was his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) The law of Christ was one of love:
i) Love for the Lord
ii) Love for the brethren
iii) Love for ministry

3. “That I might win those who are without law”

a) Paul’s concern was how to reach out to Gentiles.
b) He developed a very strong and effective ministry to the Gentiles.

4. “To the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak”

a) The weak would refer to both “Jews and Gentiles”.
b) Weakness
i) Physical
ii) Emotional
iii) Spiritual

5. “I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some”

a) Paul saw himself developing strong ministry skills.
b) He had learned how to adapt and yet true to the Lord and the ministry given to him.
c) His focus remained strong and true- “that I might by all means save some”.
