"That you also may have fellowship with us..."

Text: 1 John 1:3

PROFOUND FELLOWSHIP

What is fellowship? A common understanding is to think of “fellowship” as good conversation among friends. The Apostle John introduces a more profound idea of “fellowship” in this text.

“That which we have seen and heard we declare to you,
that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly
our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.”
1 John 1:3

1. “That which we have seen and heard we declare to you”

a) This is a reference to what John and the other disciples/apostles had experienced with Jesus.
b) Not everyone was privileged to have personally seen Jesus or heard Him speak.
c) John was doing his utmost to share what he had personally heard and seen.

2. “That you also may have fellowship with us”

a) John’s goal was clearly stated here.
b) His desire was to impart what he had both seen and heard as much as possible.
c) The goal is for his readers to have great fellowship with John and those who had seen and heard.
d) The word “fellowship” takes on a profound dimension here.
i) John and his fellow disciples must have had great fellowship with Jesus.
ii) Many would have imagined that this “fellowship” would have been limited to them.
iii) John offers a tremendous thought here- his readers can have similarly great fellowship!
