"And shall assure our hearts before Him."

Text: 1 John 3:19

ASSURANCE OF OUR SALVATION

From time to time we may be plagued by doubts. Dark thoughts come and we become unsure of our salvation in Christ. How may we battle such thoughts and be fully assured of our salvation?

“And by this we know that we are of the truth,
and shall assure our hearts before Him.”
1 John 3:19

1. “And by this”

a) When faith expresses itself in deeds.

b) When love is expressed in practical ways to brethren in need.

c) When all the good deeds we do are done in the name of truth.

d) By any of these things we know our faith in the Lord is genuine.

2. “We know that we are of the truth”

a) Knowledge is important.

b) When knowledge expresses itself in deeds of love.

c) This reality confirms that we are indeed “of the truth”.

i) Truth as taught by the Lord Jesus.

ii) Truth as exemplified in His life.

3. “And shall assure our hearts before Him”

a) The word “assure” comes from the idea of being “persuaded” or “convinced”.

b) From examining our hearts objectively.

i) Our verbal confession of faith.

ii) The deeds that match our confession of faith.

iii) Our genuine loving concern for the brethren.

iv) Our practical concerns for those in need.

c) These things can help us be assured that we are truly of the Lord.

i) That we are His children.

ii) That we have the seed of Christ in us.

iii) That we will not stand condemned when we inevitably fall into sin from time to time.

iv) This assurance can bring such joy and comfort to our hearts.
