"We love Him..."

Text: 1 John 4:19

LOVE FOR THE LORD

There was no question that the Apostle John loved the Lord Jesus Christ. But can we speak of a real love for the Lord?

“We love Him because He first loved us.”
1 John 4:19

1. “We love Him”

a) John bore witness of his love for the Lord Jesus Christ.

b) This is an open declaration of his love for the Lord.

c) The pronoun “we” would include

i) The apostles of the Lord.

ii) The associates and friends of John.

d) This love for the Lord was well-evidenced

i) Through their testimony.

ii) In their service.

iii) In their life.

iv) In the sacrifices made in the ministry for the Lord.

2. “Because He first loved us”

a) John did not “make a big deal” of his love for the Lord.

b) His love for the Lord was real and outstanding but this was not his focus.

c) His focus was the love of God demonstrated.

i) He first loved us when we were yet sinners.

ii) He continues to love us even when we falter and fail.

iii) The love of God is truly magnificent.

3. Our love for the Lord

a) It is an appropriate response to the Lord.

b) It is important to keep a proper perspective of our love for the Lord.

i) It is but human love.

ii) It is good and valuable but can never be compared to God’s love for us.

It is vital that there is appropriate humility when we speak of our love for God.
