"Of this salvation"

Text: 1 Peter 1:10

GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION

The Lord’s plan of salvation did not commence in the New Testament period. His plan was already made known to His prophets.

“Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully,
who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,”
1 Peter 1:10

1. “Of this salvation”

a) The reference is the salvation mentioned earlier.

b) “The salvation of your souls” (1 Peter 1:9).

2. “The prophets”

a) This was a special group of servants of God.

b) The LORD raised them up individually.

i) They were given special messages of God.

ii) Courageously, they addressed problems that affected the nation.

iii) They were not priests or kings.

iv) To these prophets God revealed His great plan of salvation.

v) Some prophets were non-writing prophets. (Elijah, Elisha-
They were, nevertheless, significant in their ministries.)

c) Some outstanding prophets who proclaimed God’s salvation:

i) Isaiah (Birth, Ministry and Suffering)

ii) Jeremiah (New Covenant)

iii) Daniel (The Son of Man and His kingdom)

iv) Micah (The birthplace of the Messiah)

v) Zechariah (The Shepherd of the flock)

vi) Malachi (The Saviour would be preceded by a forerunner)

3. “Have inquired and searched carefully”

a) The example of the prophets in their search for knowledge and truth.

b) Two verbs were used, side by side:

i) Both are what we call “compound verbs”.

ii) They tend to intensify the meaning of the verb.

iii) Both verbs are synonyms.

c) To “inquire” and “search”

i) They did not search casually.

ii) They did their research thoroughly and carefully.

4. “Who prophesied of the grace that would come to you”

a) After they had determined the matter of the doctrine of salvation.

b) They proclaimed this salvation.

i) The key feature of this plan of salvation was “grace”.

ii) This salvation was preached by the prophets.

iii) This was the message of salvation preached by the apostles too.
