1 Peter
"Disobedient to the word"
Text: 1 Peter 2:8
THE PROPHETIC WORD
The Apostle Peter was most conscious of the prophetic Scriptures. Once again, he cited the Word of God.
“And
‘A stone of stumbling
And a rock of offense.’
They stumble, being disobedient to the word,
to which they also were appointed.”
1 Peter 2:8
1. “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense”
a) The text cited was Isaiah 8:14.
b) This was a profound prophecy.
i) The Messiah is in view.
ii) On the one hand, He is the living stone, the chief cornerstone.
iii) On the other hand, He would be “a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense”.
2. “They stumble”
a) Those who had rejected the Lord Jesus.
b) They had no real cause for stumbling.
c) They stumble because of their sinfulness.
3. “Disobedient to the word”
a) How were they disobedient to the word?
i) They paid lip service to the Word of God.
ii) Their hearts were far from the Lord.
iii) They added their own laws.
iv) They were stubborn and full of pride.
b) The warning given by the Lord:
i) In His encounters with the leaders (Matthew 15).
ii) In a word spoken publicly (Matthew 23).
c) To which they were appointed:
i) The prophetic word foretold this rejection (Isaiah 8:14).
ii) They were appointed in the sense of their having rejected the Word (Isaiah 6:9-10).
iii) They could have turned at the rebuke of the prophets like Isaiah.
a) Those who had rejected the Lord Jesus.
b) They had no real cause for stumbling.
c) They stumble because of their sinfulness.

We are reminded of this text in the Scriptures.
“And the LORD God of their fathers sent warnings to them
by His messengers, rising up early and sending them,
because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place.
But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words,
and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose
against His people, till there was no remedy.”
2 Chronicles 36:15-16
