"A chosen generation"

Text: 1 Peter 2:9

CHOSEN BY THE LORD

How wonderful to be among the chosen of the Lord! The thought of being chosen was one of the first thoughts of the Apostle Peter when he began writing this first epistle (1 Peter 1:2).

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, His own special people,
that you may proclaim the praises of Him
who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.”
1 Peter 2:9

1. The word “chosen”

a) It was translated “elect” (1 Peter 1:2).
b) “Chosen” and “elect” are exactly the same (1 Peter 2:9).

2. “A chosen generation”

a) Being chosen is truly special.
b) But it is not limited to the apostles and prophets.
c) It applied to a whole “generation”.

3. “A royal priesthood”

a) This is an expansion of the idea “a holy priesthood” (1 Peter 2:5).
b) Peter elaborates on this priesthood. It is truly “a royal priesthood”.
i) The Lord Jesus is King.
ii) We are God’s children.
iii) We are called “a royal priesthood” out of the Lord’s grace and mercy.

4. “A holy nation”

a) Individually, we are children of God.
b) Collectively, we are like “a nation”.
c) We are reminded that we are to be characterised by holiness, thus, “a holy nation”.

5. “His own special people”

a) How wonderful to be called God’s people.
b) The word “special” well describes what we are to God.
i) We are specially made by God to be His people.
ii) We become as it were, a prized possession of the Lord.

6. A wonderful task given to God’s own special people

a) To proclaim praises to God.
i) Our hearts must naturally sing to the Lord.
ii) It is natural to praise Him.
b) One special reason highlighted as to why we praise God.
i) We lived in darkness once.
ii) But we now have the light of God.
iii) Jesus is the “light of the world” (John 8:12).
iv) The heart cannot but praise God that we can see the light.
