"The ignorance of foolish men"

Text: 1 Peter 2:15

REBELLIOUS PEOPLE

Were there people who rebelled against the authority of Rome? The sad reality was that there were insurrections against Rome from time to time. Rome’s response was always swift and harsh. They put down rebellion with the sword. The aftermath was always worse than the original state. The Apostle wrote strongly and clearly on the matter of submission.

“For this is the will of God, that by doing good
you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men-”
1 Peter 2:15

1.”For this is the will of God”

a) The revelation of the will of God:
i) It was in the law of Moses.
ii) It was further revealed by the prophets in the Old Testament.
iii) It was revealed to the apostles in the New Testament days.
b) Once the will of God is ascertained:
i) That will must be obeyed.
ii) Believers must find the wisdom and the grace to obey the will of God.

2. “By doing good”

a) Believers were not to join people who argued for rebellion.
b) Instead, they were challenged to do that which is good.
c) This was clearly taught by the Lord Jesus Himself (Matthew 5:16).
i) Good works will glorify God.
ii) They were enjoined.

3 “You may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men”

a) Peter has a clear view of people who incited others to rebel.
b) They were crisply described:
i) They were ignorant of the will of God.
ii) They were foolish people.
c) “Put to silence”
i) There was no point arguing with those who go against the will of God.
ii) The best way is to obey the Lord and His will.
iii) By doing that which is good and right in the eyes of God, the ignorant and foolish may be perhaps “silenced”.
