"The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous"

Text: 1 Peter 3:12

THE EYES OF THE LORD

The Apostle Peter practised an awareness of the Lord’s presence in the world. He watches carefully all that is on earth.

“Let him turn away from evil and do good;
Let him seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,
And His ears are open to their prayers;
But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil.”
1 Peter 3:11-12

1. “Let him turn away from evil and do good”

a) “Evil”
The believer must naturally turn away from that which is evil.
b) “Good”
The believer must not only refrain from doing evil, he must endeavour to do good.

2. “Let him seek peace and pursue it”

a) “Peace”
This must be sought and pursued.
b) “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Seventh Beatitude)
The peacemakers are indeed true children of God (Matthew 5:9).

3. “For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers”

a) Eyes and ears of the Lord:
i) They are used to describe the attentiveness of the Lord to His people.
ii) The Lord is particularly concerned about how His people behave.
iii) He wants them to live as righteous people.
b) The prayers of the righteous:
i) The Lord’s ears are indeed open to hear the prayers of the righteous.
ii) The challenge is to be diligent in practical righteousness.

4. “But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil”

a) God will not hear the prayers of evil ones.
b) On the contrary, He is against those who do evil

These words of advice were not unknown things. These words were essentially reminders to believers to faithfully live righteously in the presence of God.
