"Ruling their children and their own houses well."

Text: 1 Timothy 3:12

THE FAMILY OF THE DEACON

After the brief mention of female deacons, the apostle Paul returned to discussing the family life of the deacon. The emphasis is similar to that mentioned earlier with reference to the family life of the elder.

“Let deacons be the husbands of one wife,
ruling their children and their own houses well.”

1 Timothy 3:12

1. “Let deacons be the husbands of one wife”

a) Monogamy is emphasised.
b) The ministry of a deacon and his family life are linked.
c) A similar approach was taken with reference to the life of the elder (1 Timothy 3:2).
d) There is no separation between ministry and family life.
e) Even if a deacon has a good knowledge of the faith but fails in his family life, he will not be able to serve well.

2. “Ruling their children and their own houses well”

a) The word “ruling” has certain implications.
i) He manages his children and household well.
ii) He leads the family.
iii) He is engaged in the affairs of his children and household effectively.
b) “Their Children”
i) There must be a strong relationship between the father (deacon) and his children.
ii) The strong family becomes an example to others.
c) “Their own houses”
i) This has to do with running a household well.
ii) This displays some administrative skill.
iii) It reflects well on the deacon whose household is well-managed.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

The focus here is obvious! The stature and worth of the deacon is manifested in the way he leads his family.

1. This helps create a powerful impact on the community.

2. This in turn enhances the ministry of the deacon in the church.

3. The challenge to lead by example is well-underscored in this text.
