"Now I trust you will understand..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 1:13

CLEAR UNDERSTANDING

Paul wrote about how he lived to explain a complex situation that had arisen.

“For we are not writing any other things to you
than what you read or understand.
Now I trust you will understand, even to the end
(as also you have understood us in part),
that we are your boast as you also are ours,
in the day of the Lord Jesus.”
2 Corinthians 1:13-14

1. “For we are not writing any other things to you than what you read or understand”

Paul was consistent: –

a) His life and his writings.
b) He did what he said.

2. “Now I trust you will understand, even to the end”

a) The word “trust” may be better understood as “hope”.
b) Understanding
i) This is based on knowledge.
ii) Knowledge of Paul and the person he was.
iii) Knowledge of Paul and how he did things.
iv) From knowledge to understanding.

c) “To the end”
i) It is good to start well.
ii) It is important to have the same understanding to the very end.

3. “As also you have understood us in part”

a) This was Paul’s appreciation of the relationship he had with the Corinthians.
b) There was good understanding but only in part.
c) There were other things that they did not know about Paul and his ministry and life.

4. “That we are your boast as you also are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus”

a) The word “boast” was used in a healthy and positive manner here.
i) Paul delighted in the Corinthians.
ii) The Corinthians in turn delighted in Paul as their founder of the Church.
b) In the day of the Lord Jesus

This was a reference to the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. His return was felt to be imminent. This was the way in which the early church understood this doctrine.
