Day 18

"All the promises of God in Him are Yes..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 1:20

A SCHOLAR OF THE SCRIPTURES

Paul was a scholar who studied the Scriptures under the famous Gamaliel (Acts 22:3). Before coming to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, his understanding of the Scriptures was skewed.

1. He was “taught according to the strictness of our father’s law.” (Acts 22:3)

2. “And was zealous toward God…” (Acts 22:3)

CONFESSION OF SIN AND ERROR

Paul confessed with great humility and sorrow what he was like in those days.

“I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man;
but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.”
1 Timothy 1:13

A NEW AND CORRECT UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORD OF GOD

As time passed, and as Paul studied more and more of the Scriptures, he found the following truths.

“Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart,
from a good conscience, and from sincere faith.”
1 Timothy 1:5

A DEEP APPRECIATION OF THE WORD OF GOD

Paul then went on to cultivate a deep appreciation of the Word of God.

“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes,
and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”
2 Corinthians 1:20

1. The Word of God

a) They were more than just laws.
b) They were also “promises”.
i) Life-giving
ii) Love-producing

2. “The promises of God”

a) The culmination of the word of God was Christ Jesus Himself (Romans 10:4).
b) And they are to be appreciated profoundly.
c) Two special characteristics may be highlighted:
i) They are “Yes!”
ii) They are “Amen!”
d) They are meant to be
i) Positive
ii) Affirmative

3. “To the glory of God through us”

The promises of God especially reflect His glory! Paul felt it a great privilege to be a preacher of the Word!
