"Measuring themselves by themselves..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 10:12

THE USE OF COMPARISON

Paul had little choice but to compare his life and ministry with that of the detractors. It seems as if there was no way to win back those whom his enemies had influenced adversely.

“For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves
with those who commend themselves.
But they, measuring themselves by themselves,
and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.”
2 Corinthians 10:12

1. “For we dare not class ourselves”

a) The word “class” comes from the word “judge”.
b) Paul would not judge his own ministry.
c) He would not pat himself on the back.

2. “Or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves”

a) Paul refused to compare himself and his fellow-workers the way his detractors did.
b) Paul saw themselves :
i) As bondservants.
ii) As having been entrusted with the Gospel.
iii) As servants who were conscious of their need for the mercy and grace of God in ministry.
c) His detractors did not see themselves in the same light.
i) They took pride in their deeds.
ii) They commended themselves highly.

3. “But they, measuring themselves by themselves”

a) They set up their own standards.
b) When they fulfilled their goals they commended themselves.
c) They measured things not according to the Lord and His word apparently.
d) Or they would not have taken this approach.

4. “And comparing themselves among themselves”

a) They would end up commending each other.
b) They would feel themselves superior to others.
c) They despised others not in their circles.

5. “Are not wise”

This was obvious to Paul! Any fool can commend himself! There is no wisdom in this approach to life and ministry. Paul had to make this necessary comment about the way his detractors conducted themselves in life and ministry!
