Text: 2 Corinthians 3:16

THE HEALING OF SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS

The problem of physical blindness is tough. The issue of spiritual blindness is even worse!

“But even to this day, when Moses is read,
a veil lies on their heart.
Nevertheless, when one turns to the Lord,
the veil is taken away.”
2 Corinthians 3:15-16

a) In context, Paul was making reference to the problem of spiritual blindness.
b) It existed in the days of Moses, and it had continued to the present time.

2. “When Moses is read”

a) This is a reference to the books of Moses.
b) The first five books are called “The Pentateuch”.
c) In the synagogues, the reading of the writings of Moses was a regular feature.

3. “A veil lies on their heart”

a) This veil prevented people from seeing the truth.
b) The heart is spiritually blind.
c) Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians was that the eyes of their heart would be enlightened.
(Ephesians 1:18 “the eyes of your understanding” – the word understanding is with reference to the heart)

4. “Nevertheless, when one turns to the Lord”

a) The word “Lord” can be used to refer to
i) God the Father.

ii) Jesus Christ is often called “Lord” in the Pauline epistles.

b) In this context
i) The reference is most likely to be the Lord Jesus Christ.
ii) “Christ” is specifically mentioned in the previous verse (2 Corinthians 3:14).

5. “The veil is taken away”

a) The Lord Jesus Christ healed people who were blind (Mark 8:22-26; Mark 9:47-48)
b) When people turn to the Lord Jesus Christ, their spiritual blindness can be healed as well.
c) Spiritual sight will be given; one will see the Lord Jesus Christ as the Messiah- Saviour.
d) The veil will no longer hinder spiritual sight.

This is the glorious hope that Paul was committed to sharing with people!
