"And what accord has Christ with Belial?"

Text: 2 Corinthians 6:15

A VITAL DOCTRINE EMPHASISED

The doctrine of belonging to the Lord Jesus Christ was a vital doctrine that Paul defended. Believing in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour is certainly important. However, the ramifications of a true faith in Christ must be given full consideration!

“And what accord has Christ with Belial?
Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?”
2 Corinthians 6:15

1. Christ and Belial contrasted

2. Christ

a) This is a reference to Jesus Christ (The Messiah).
b) He is our Saviour.
c) He stands for all that is good and righteous.
d) He is the Holy One of God.

3. Belial

a) This is a transliteration of a Hebrew word.
b) What it means:
i) A reference to the wicked.
ii) A general reference to wickedness.
c) Belial is the opposite of what Christ stands for.

4. The word “accord” translates the Greek “symphonesis”

a) The idea of “symphony” was in Paul’s mind.
b) There is no “symphony” between Christ and Belial.
c) There is “cacophony”.

5. The Believer and the Unbeliever

a) The believer is not just one who professes faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) Mere confession of faith does not mean that the individual will enter into the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:21-23).
c) The true believer will produce good and godly fruit (Matthew 7:17-20).
d) The unbeliever
i) He does not have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
ii) He is not able to produce fruits of righteousness.

Paul’s conclusion was stated as rhetorical questions.

“And what accord has Christ with Belial?
Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?”
