"Godly sorrow..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 7:10

BEING GENUINE

To be genuine is to be treasured. It is hard to see genuineness. The danger of being superficial is very real and dangerous. Paul distinguished between genuine godly sorrow and the sorrow of the world.

“For godly sorrow produces repentance
leading to salvation, not to be regretted;
but the sorrow of the world produces death.”
2 Corinthians 7:10

1. Godly sorrow and the sorrow of the world

a) There are similarities.
b) But there are differences too.
c) The differences must be carefully noted.

2. But godly sorrow produces repentance

a) There is a sorrow that is according to God.
b) It leads one to repentance.
i) There is genuine sorrow (Psalm 51).
ii) There is deep regret.
iii) There is a desire to change.

3. “But the sorrow of the world produces death”

a) The world’s way of dealing with error and sin is different.
b) It does not regard sin seriously.
c) There is no repentance.
d) There is no desire to seek forgiveness or change.
e) The individual remains the same.
f) The sorrow of the world leads to death.

4. “Leading to salvation”

a) God will deliver the repentant.
b) He will make a way of escape.
c) He will bring about salvation.

5. “Not to be regretted”

a) There is no regret in true sorrow and repentance.
b) There is only genuine humility in seeking God.
c) Genuine sorrow and repentance is something we would never need to regret.
