"You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 8:9

THE GLORIOUS EXAMPLE OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

It is not wrong to cite human examples. However, the most wonderful example to cite must surely always be that of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that though He was rich, yet for your sakes
He became poor, that you through His poverty
might become rich.”
2 Corinthians 8:9

1. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ”

a) The grace of the Lord was well-known.
i) He was full of grace and truth (John 1:14, 17).
ii) We are saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8).
b) The grace of Christ was applied in a special way in this text.
An amazing insight was shared.

2. “That though He was rich”

a) He was the Son of God.
b) He was anointed and appointed King (Psalm 2:6-7).
c) God would have given the Messiah anything He wished (Psalm 2:8).
d) Yes, Jesus was “rich!”

3. “Yet for your sakes He became poor”

a) For the sake of mankind, Jesus donned flesh (John 1:14)
b) He humbled Himself and took on the role of a servant (Philippians 2:5-11).
c) He was born in a manger.
d) He grew up in a poor town called Nazareth and He depended upon the faithful for all His physical needs.

4. “That you through His poverty might become rich”

a) We have been so greatly blessed (Psalm 103:1-5).
b) We have been so blessed materially too (Mark 10:29-30).

THE CHALLENGE

What should we do with the riches the Lord has given us? Let us ponder this word.

“Command those who are rich in this present age
not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches
but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.
Let them do good, that they be rich in good works,
ready to give, willing to share.”
1 Timothy 6:17-18
