2 Peter
"Make your call and election sure"
Text: 2 Peter 1:10
MISTAKEN SALVATION
Some assume that they have salvation from God. There is a danger that we have made a false assumption. It is a problem that needs to be addressed.
“Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent
to make your call and election sure,
for if you do these things you will never stumble.”
2 Peter 1:10
1. “Therefore, brethren”
a) Great concern was expressed.
b) People who express faith are called “brethren”.
c) The question is whether they are “truly brethren”.
2. Why was this matter raised up?
a) There were some who did not possess anything more than just a verbal profession
of faith.
b) They did not display any distinctive Christian qualities (2 Peter 1:5-7).
c) They were so spiritually short-sighted, to the point of “blindness”.
3. “Be even more diligent”
a) The word “diligent” was used again (2 Peter 1:5).
b) If we are to check our salvation, we must do this even “more” diligently:
i) With eagerness
ii) With energy
4. “To make your call and election sure”
a) This is a reference to salvation.
b) The word “call”
i) This is God’s invitation to repent from sins.
ii) This is gracious invitation to believe in the Lord Jesus as Saviour.
c) The word “election”
i) The believer recognizes that he is unworthy to receive salvation.
ii) God has graciously “elected” him to become a child of His.
iii) The believer ought to be filled with gratitude for his salvation from God.
d) To make sure:
i) To be very certain.
ii) The best way to ascertain true salvation is the cultivation of our new nature.
iii) The qualities Peter described ought to be nurtured well (2 Peter 1:5-7).
5. “For if you do these things you will never stumble”
a) How wonderful it is to have this confidence that we need never stumble.
b) If we do these things, we would not need to fear stumbling.
c) Let us cultivate the following diligently:
i) Faith
ii) Virtue
iii) Knowledge
iv) Self-control
v) Perseverance
vi) Brotherly kindness
vii) Love
