"Eyewitnesses of His majesty"

Text: 2 Peter 1:16

SPEAKING AS AN EYEWITNESS

The Apostles were the original disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. Three of them were given the special privilege of seeing Jesus at His Transfiguration (Mark 9:2-8). Peter spoke of himself as an eyewitness of the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“For we did not follow cunningly devised fables
when we made known to you
the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.”
2 Peter 1:16

1. “For we did not follow cunningly devised fables”

a) “Cunningly devised fables”

i) There were some who spun fables about Jesus.

ii) Peter distanced himself from such people.

b) They had never followed such practices.

i) They had never done so.

ii) They never will.

2. “When we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”

a) Perhaps Peter had to speak of some of the miracles Jesus had performed.

b) He assured his readers that those stories were true.

c) They were not fabricated stories at all.

d) Peter was one of the original eyewitnesses of what Jesus did

e) The power of the Lord

i) This was indisputable.

ii) This was evident to all who were there as eyewitnesses.

f) The coming of our Lord Jesus Christ

i) Jesus came to fulfil prophecies of the Christ (The Messiah).

ii) His deeds proved that He was indeed Lord.

3. “But were eyewitnesses of His majesty”

a) An eyewitness

i) One must actually be there to see the event.

ii) Peter claimed that he was one of those eyewitnesses.

b) The word “majesty”

i) This word describes the idea of “greatness”.

ii) The Being of Jesus as the LORD is one that is filled with greatness.

iii) This greatness was seen in His life and in His deeds.
