"We heard this voice"

Text: 2 Peter 1:18

RECALLING THE TRANSFIGURATION OF JESUS

There were many mighty miracles performed by the Lord Jesus. Each one demonstrated awesome power! But the most significant memory was the one where Jesus was transfigured and the voice of God was heard!

“For He received from God the Father honour and glory
when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory:
‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’
And we heard this voice which came from heaven
when we were with Him on the holy mountain.”
2 Peter 1:17-18

1. “For He received from God the Father honour and glory”

a) Jesus received both honour and glory.

b) These came from none other than God the Father Himself.

2. “When such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'”

a) This is a reference to the time when Jesus was baptised.

b) The voice of God was heard from heaven.

c) Heaven was beautifully described as “From the Excellent Glory”.

i) It was a place of “Excellent Glory”.

ii) This was noted in the Gospels (Matthew 3:17; Mark 1:11; Luke 3:22).

3. “And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.”

a) Peter testified that he and his two fellow-disciples, James and John, heard the voice
of God Himself.

b) They were with the Lord Jesus on the holy mountain.

i) The Gospel writers did not disclose the name of the mountain.

ii) The significance would not be found in the mountain itself.

c) They heard the voice of the Lord saying:

“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”
Matthew 17:5

i) The words of God the Father at the Baptism of Jesus were repeated at the Transfiguration of the Lord Jesus Christ.

ii) The majesty of Jesus was seen in His Transfiguration.

iii) It was made even more significant with the voice of God affirming Jesus
as the Beloved Son in whom the Lord was well-pleased.
