"The Lord is not slack"

Text: 2 Peter 3:9

ANOTHER HIDDEN DANGER

The false teachers were hinting that God was slack in the keeping of His promises. Peter challenged this false assumption.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise,
as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us,
not willing that any should perish
but that all should come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9

1. “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness”

a) This was the hidden word of the false teachers.

b) They thought God was quite slack in fulfilling His promises.

c) Peter answered forthrightly.

i) The Lord is not slack in anything.

ii) He is certainly not slack concerning His promise.

d) The context of the word “promise” is that of the Second Coming of Christ (2 Peter 3:4).

2. “But is longsuffering toward us”

a) One of God’s attributes is “longsuffering”.

b) It means, “very patient”.

c) If God wanted to, He could judge us for all our sins!

d) Instead, God has been gracious and longsuffering.

e) His patience must not be seen as “slackness”.

3. “Not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance”

a) He does not wish for anyone to perish.

b) He wishes that all may recognize their sinfulness.

c) And then seek God in humble repentance.

d) This truth displays the great heart of love and compassion of God.

e) God’s longsuffering is a deep moving truth.

f) This is one more reason why the Lord has not fulfilled His promise of returning to earth.
