"God did not spare the angels who sinned"

Text: 2 Peter 2:4

UNDERSTANDING GOD’S JUDGMENT

Peter went on to explain about God’s judgment. This teaching is deep and profound.

“For if God did not spare the angels who sinned,
but cast them down to hell
and delivered them into chains of darkness,
to be reserved for judgment.”
2 Peter 2:4

1. “For if God did not spare the angels who sinned”

a) Understanding: “The angels who sinned”.

b) This phrase is better understood when we read Revelation 12:7-9.

i) Satan rebelled against God in heaven.

ii) He gathered angels and staged a rebellion against God.

iii) They were all cast out of heaven.

c) God’s judgment was obvious.

i) He did not spare the angels.

ii) They had sinned and had been unrepentant.

2. “But cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness”

a) The word “hell”

i) The word used here is “Tartarus”.

ii) Greek was then the lingua franca (for both Jews and Gentiles).

iii) Tartarus was a term to describe a realm within Hades.
(Hades is also translated as “hell”.)

b) In this “hell” (Tartarus)

i) The angels are delivered and bound with chains of darkness.

ii) They are, of course, not literal chains.

iii) But they are bound by darkness.

3. “To be reserved for judgment”

a) There will be a final judgment.

b) The word “reserved” means “kept”.

i) They were not spared from God’s wrath.

ii) They were expelled from heaven.

iii) They are chained with darkness and can never see the Light of God.

iv) They are being kept until the Day of Judgment.
